The Role of the Implant Care Practitioner & Dental Hygienist in the Prevention and Management of Peri-Implant Disease

Implant dentistry has improved the lives of millions of people with missing teeth providing them with confidence resembling natural dentition.  Continued innovations in implant design and treatments modalities have led to a high degree of overall success. Still, as this area of dentistry continues to demonstrate exponential growth, peri-implantitis remains a global concern.

Peri-implant disease, including peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis, can be caused by a range of surgical and restorative factors, but can also be greatly influenced by the level of home and professional care. Great emphasis has been placed on the role of the dental hygienist in the early detection and prevention of peri-implant diseases; however, protocols for implant maintenance remain unclear. In addition to this, research suggests that the dental hygiene implant process of care is a separate entity from what is standard for natural teeth. This may include the need for longer appointment times, adopting technologies, advanced knowledge and the need for hands on clinical training.

In this course, Shavonne Healy, will introduce the role of the Implant Care Practitioner (ICP) and discuss how dental teams can collaborate with the ICP to better serve patients with dental implants. She will also present  innovations in dental hygiene diagnostics, maintenance, and treatment protocols to prevent and manage peri-implant disease.

Participants will learn:

  • How to recognize early signs of peri-implant disease
  • Strategies to prevent peri-implant disease
  • Treatment modalities and tools to manage peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis
